Jasper at night

This picture was taken in Jasper. I must go back there someday. This picture is actually a night shot. It was as black as night, with a full moon behind me with subtle lighting. NOW, look in the night sky... you can see star trails. Stars trail when you leave your shutter open for more then a few minutes. The earth rotates and the stars leave a little trail showing you the rotation of the earth. NOW, this picture is even more special. With that technique I added the moon light. Moon light is reflected sun light. So by taking pictures with the moon behind you, you can get day pictures with star trails!! My urge was to not only get star trails in night time shot that looks like the day, but also get star trails in the water. Jasper has it all. So beautiful. I must go back there !

How did I do this?

Try your own star trails with night shots that look like its daytime. First when people tell you to go out at the ends or the beginning of the month, so its nice and dark... IGNORE them. Go out right in the middle. That is when the moon is the best. Choose some where dark, where there are no lights. Find some water, find a mountain and watch out for the moose and elk, expecially if its rutting season! Trust me on this one $$

You need a camera with a BULB setting. It will have a "B" on the exposure dial. If you have this, all you need now is a shutter release. This allows you to hold your shutter open without using your finger, so the camera doesn't shake.

I get this effect by setting my camera to the "B" bulb setting and using something called a shutter release. It holds the shutter open for long periods of time and using the bulb setting lets me hold it open for as long as I choose.

I used Fuji 100 ISO with F4 on a 28mm lens with the moon at my back and a 15 minute exposure.
